In
little more than two hundred years, a blink in Nature's evolutionary eye, the number of
people inhabiting our planet has multiplied more than six-fold. Garbage, the
discarded remains of the products manufactured and grown to satisfy our real and imagined
needs, the metal and wood in which they are packed and shipped, the paper and plastic that
advertise them, all find their way to dump and incinerator, to street and roadside.
Garbage is our historical emblem.
Art
is a snapshot of culture, a historically defined vision of society expressed within the
limits of the technology and materials of the time. Collage, the art medium in which
garbage constitutes both materiel and final object, will one day represent the present to
the future as painting and sculpture represent the past to the present.
